Who Does What?

Team Avi:

We want the Power BI Professional and the Business User to work together directly.
Our main job is to bring them together and then act like the guard-rails in the bowling alley - keep you aimed at your goal and avoid ending up in the gutter :-)

  • Connect Business Users with Power BI Professionals inside our Power BI Consultant Program

  • Manage any questions/issues/conflicts about the program

  • Provide extensive training, coaching and support to Power BI Professionals inside our Programs on:

    • Power BI

    • How to Work as a Power BI Consultant

    • Running a #RealPowerBI Project

  • Regular touch points for the Power BI Consultant Program Members to get direct support from Avi

  • Dedicated Microsoft Teams Channel for Power BI Consultant Program Members to get support from Avi and peer members

Business User:

  • Provide support, guidance and feedback to your assigned Power BI Professional (they can’t do this without you!)

  • Join meetings requested/set up by the Power BI Professional

  • Be responsive to questions over email to keep the project moving forward

Power BI Professional:

  • Lead the Business User through the project

  • Set up initial meeting and then recurring meetings

  • Work on the Power BI project in an agile manner and deliver the best results possible!

#RealPowerBI Principle: Power BI = Agile BI

We believe that Power BI is Agile BI.

We have seen companies use the old traditional approach with Power BI (Waterfall approach) often with disastrous results.

Power BI is a modern technology and works best with the modern agile approach.

Here’s what your assigned Power BI Professional would NOT do (the Old Waterfall Model):

  • Would NOT write verbose requirement documents (See Tree-Swing Story).

  • Would NOT try to take a long time to try to finish a lengthy project with all your requirements.

  • Would NOT then get into a match of he-said she-said when it fails to meet those requirements

Following the agile approach, here’s what your assigned Professional WOULD do:

  • WOULD meet with you to understand your requirements

  • WOULD then discuss with you to identify the first step we should focus on (the Minimum Viable Project or MVP)

  • WOULD work in quick weekly sprints, checking in with you each week

  • WOULD scope and re-scope as needed to stay focused on getting immediate results

  • WOULD aim to deliver a complete model, not a work-in-progress, not a prototype

The First Meeting

The first order of business would be to set up the initial meeting. You assigned Power BI Professional would reach out to you over email to get your first meeting scheduled.

The first meeting should aim to accomplish the following:

  • Learn a bit more about each other (you would be working closely together for the next 4-5 weeks)

  • Understand the Problem/Goals

  • Define the Scope of the Project (either on the call or soon afterwards). See notes on “Agile BI” above

  • Set Recurring Meeting Schedule (we recommend meeting at least once a week)

  • Discuss Options for Data Access (simplest and recommended is to export your data to CSV or Excel files, but other options can be considered as well)

Recurring Meeting

Your assigned Power BI Professional would work on your project between meetings.

On the recurring meeting, they would typically cover:

  • Present to you the progress made. What was done? And wherever appropriate, share with you, why the approach was taken? (The goal is to educate and empower you as we go along the project)

  • Get your feedback and decide plan for next week

  • Ask any questions that they might have for you

In between the meetings, they may reach out to you for guidance/questions.
This can be via email or any other method you both agree upon (Skype etc.)

Final Presentation (Optional)

Selected RealPowerBI Projects are presented as part of our finale. However the project will:

  • Only be presented if you provide an explicit approval to do so

  • Only be presented after any sensitive data, names, company names have been removed
(you would be able to review the presentation before hand to confirm)

If you have any questions, discuss it with your assigned Power BI Professional.
If needed, you can also reach Team Avi anytime at avi@avising.com

⚡Power On!⚡
